Funeral services were conducted from the Houston Funeral Home Chapel Monday, January 8, at 2 p.m., for Winfield Bates Tabb, mason, bank official, druggist, former mayor, and Houston's first scoutmaster, who died at the Houston Hospital at 5 a.m., Sunday, January 7, after an illness of two weeks. He was 84.
The Rev. John Bowie, pastor of the Houston First Methodist Church, officiated. Interment was in the Houston Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Arnold Simpson, T. J. Colburn, Deedy Harrington, Gus Pearson, Hal Allen, B. C. Hill, Dave Burks and Bobby Pearson.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Virginia Mosley Tabb of Houston; a sister, Mrs. Scottie Sue Halbert of Dallas, Texas, four nieces and a nephew.
Bates Tabb owned and operated Tabb Bros., druggists in Houston for many years, and was active in business until several weeks ago when he became ill.
He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University, a director and vice president of the Houston State Bank, member of several pharmaceutical associations, and served Houston as its mayor from 1925 through 1928.
Mr. Tabb resided at the same home in Houston where he was born—in the ante bellum home constructed here just prior to the Civil War by the late Judge William Stowt Bates. The Magnolia trees in the yard were brought here from Mobile and planted by Judge Bates.
Mr. Tabb was born in Houston on August 7, 1883, the son of Winfield Featherston Tabb and Scottie Maria Bates Tabb. He was a member and a steward of the First Methodist Church of Houston. (from the Times Post, Houston, Mississippi, dated January 11, 1968)

Mrs. Bates Tabb Dies After Long Illness
Mrs. Virginia Adelaide Moseley Tabb, widow of the late former Houston Mayor Bates Tabb, died at 11:30 a.m., Monday, June 2, at the Houston Hospital following a long illness. She was 87.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, June 4, at 4 o'clock from the Houston Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Howard Hathorn, pastor of the Houston First United Methodist Church, officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Eugene Russell of Greenville, a former local pastor.
Interment was in the Houston Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jack Dendy, R. C. Pearson, Jr., David L. Criddle, George Caldwell, Roy Paden Davis, and Paul Floyd.
Mrs. Tabb was the daughter of the late Thaddeus Mortimer Moseley and Julia Crowell Moseley of West Point, Mississippi. Mrs. Tab was born at West Point, Mississippi.
She had resided in Houston for 53 years. Her late husband owned and operated Tabb Bros. Drug Store here for many years, and she was associated with her husband in this business. [from the Times Post, June 5, 1975]
