Funeral for R. Lee Vinson, 65, of Rt. 5, Abilene, was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, 9-28-1963 at Elliott's Chapel of Memories, with Dr. Herbert Haney, pastor of the Hawley Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery (sic - part of Abilene Municipal cemeteries).
Mr. Vinson, a long-- time resident of the area died at Hendrick Memorial Hospital at noon Tuesday after an extensive illness. A stock farmer living north of Abilene in Jones County, he entered the hospital Jan. 11. Born Sept. 20, 1897, at Edom, Van Zandt County, he was the eldest of 11 children born to the late Henry H. and Elizabeth Vinson. The family moved to Taylor County in 1906 and settled in the Colony Hills community south of Abilene. He married Charles Lee Legg in Abilene Jan. 14, 1920, In 1925, they moved to their farm on Rt. 6 where they lived until the present time. A deacon in the Hawley Baptist Church, Mr. Vinson was active in civic affairs in the community for many years before his health started failing. He was a past president of the Taylor County Farm Bureau and was the first president here of the Minute Man Rural Electric organization.
Survivors included his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Jack A. Green of Houston; two sons, Robert Lee Vinson Jr. of Gunnison Billy Vinson of Rt. 6 brothers, Roscoe of Rt. 2. Abilene, Willard, Avery and Dow all of Rt. 5, Abilene, Herman of Dallas, Charlie of Ira and Buster of Odessa; one sister, Mrs. C. C. McMinn of Abilene; and six] grandchildren.
